En la ceremonia se otorgarán reconocimientos a latinos destacados en la comunidad, niños de 4to grado de Seymour participarán con bailables y se exhibirá el documental “A Class Apart”. Cada año celebramos el mes de la Herencia Hispana-Latina del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre. El poster es una guía para que todos participemos asistiendo a eventos culturales e informativos durante este mes. Nosotros, Tu Voz Latina participó con la cena baile de aniversario y celebración que se llevó a cabo el sábado 19 de septiembre en LeMoyne Mannor con música a cargo del grupo Son Boricua.

El viernes 16 de septiembre Nosotros le invita a la ceremonia de clausura del mes de la Herencia Latina- Hispana que se llevará a cabo en la escuela Seymour de 5:00 a 7:00 pm. Se exhibirá el documental "A Class Apart" y haremos un reconocimiento a líderes en nuestra comunidad. Los esperamos.

Every year we celebrate Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month during the month of September 15 to October 15. The above poster is the culmination of several weeks of work by a group of latino leaders and representatives of organizations that promote diversity in central NY. This year Dr. Alejandro Garcia's colorful photographs of the Mexican festivity "La Guelaguetza" made the poster a beautiful representation of latino culture and pride. Upstate Medical University generously provided the design and printing of the poster. Nosotros, Tu Voz Latina once again invited the community to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at our dinner dance on September 18 at Lemoyne Manor.

We are proudly sponsoring the closing ceremony for Hispanic Heritage Month that will take place at Seymour school on friday, October 16 from 5 pm to 7 pm. You are invited to this special event in which we will celebrate the contributions of latino leaders in our community as well as have the opportunity to watch the documentary " A Class Apart"

Una de cada 200 personas en los Estados Unidos vive con Lupus y 90 por ciento de ellas son mujeres. ¡Las mujeres Hispanas pueden estar en riesgo! El sábado 6 de junio transmitimos una entrevista con la Dra. Ledia Martínez del Departamento de salud y servicios humanos quien habló sobre el nuevo informe del Lupus y las mujeres Hispanas.

El lupus es una enfermedad crónica en la cual el sistema inmunológico ataca las células y tejidos sanos del cuerpo, como lo hace con bacterias o un virus. En la mayoría de las personas que viven con lupus, un diagnóstico temprano y un tratamiento eficaz pueden reducir los síntomas, entre ellos la inflamación y el dolor, y también pueden ayudar a que el cuerpo mantenga un funcionamiento normal y así prevenir el desarrollo de complicaciones serias.Por favor visite la página ¿Podría tener lupus? para mas información.

One out of 200 women in the United States lives with lupus and 90 percent of them are women. ¡Hispanic women could be at risk! On Saturday, June 6 we aired an interview with Dr. Ledia Martinez from the Department of health and human services, who talked to us about the new lupus' study and Hispanic women.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can last for many years. It can be life-threatening and damage any part of the body, including skin, joints or organs. Individuals with the disease can experience a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, hair loss, painful or swollen joints, fever, skin rashes and kidney problems. El pasado jueves 4 de junio Ofelia Anamaría entrevistó al superintendente del distrito escolar de la ciudad de Syracuse Daniel Lowergar acerca del programa Dí sí a la educación. Alumnos en los grados 10, 11 y 12 son elegibles para este programa que promoverá el apoyo a estudiantes para que logren concluir sus estudios de preparatoria e ingresar a la universidad. 23 universidades y colegios en el noroeste ya han establecido su apoyo al programa ofreciendo inscripción a sus instituciones sin costo alguno. Aquí pueden encontrar mas información acerca de esta importante iniciativa.

Last thursday, June 4 Ofelia Anamaria interviwed the Syracuse school district's superintendent Daniel Lowergar about the Say yes to education program. Students in grades 10, 11 and 12 are eligible to participate in the program that supports and promotes high school and college success. 23 universities in the northeast have already signed up with the initiative to offer free college tuition. Todos los días las mujeres contribuyen al bienestar de sus familias, al progreso del país y su propia superación. Nosotros, Tu Voz Latina, dedicó el último sábado del mes de Marzo a la mujer, celebrando su creatividad y su deseo de tener una vidad sana y segura. En el programa participaron Fanny Villarreal, Rebecca Fuentes, Teresita Mann y Beatriz Salcedo compartiendo información y consejos de salud, tanto fisica como mental. Los temas abordados fueron: relaciones sanas, preparación para emergencias, nutrición y ejercicio así como valiosa información educativa acerca de la prevención del VIH. Las organizaciones representadas en el foro informativo fueron P.E.A.C.E. Inc, La Cruz Roja Americana, el programa F.A.C.E.S. del Syracuse Model Neighborhood y SUNY Oswego.

Además de la información los radioescuchas tuvieron la oportunidad de participar con sus llamadas telefónicas y recibir regalos.

Our History

Nosotros Radio, Inc. - Your Latino Voice (103.9 FM), started as a dream thirteen years ago and has today become a fantastic reality. Now that we are celebrating our incorporation as a non-profit organization, we want to share our history with you! Our story is told through some of our founder Fanny Villarreal’s favorite memories. It begins like this…

A while back, I began talking to people about my dream in the hopes that they could help me in some way. My dream was to have a quality Latino radio program that would be educational, informative, perhaps bilingual, and full of good music for the whole family. Everyone I talked to liked the idea. One person I contacted was Maria de Lourdes Fallace, who at that time was Director of Community Services during Roy Bernardi’s term as Mayor. I also contacted Miles Botrill, who at the time was the Common Council Representative for Area 2 of the City of Syracuse. I called them to see if they could help me formalize the idea of a bilingual radio program.

I remember that, in those days, I was new to the City of Syracuse. I had only been living in this country for about a year and it was a bit difficult for me to understand the politics of the City. Nevertheless, my persistence led to a formal meeting with the Maria, Miles, and Sam Velazquez, who at the time was the Executive Director of the Spanish Action League. Soon after, Nosotros Radio, Inc., Your Latino Voice, first transmitted on live radio on September 15, 1993, under the tutelage of the Spanish Action League. The Spanish Action League remained the program’s fiscal agent until May 20th, 2003.

The meetings we had at my house in those early days were numerous! The original group of volunteers met often to form a strategic plan for fundraising. We were very bold! They say that he who risks nothing has nothing to gain, so I decided to take a risk, and I don’t regret my decision for a moment, because my Latino community reaped the benefits!

I invited many members of the community to the first meetings, including Martha Vergara, Ofelia Anamaria, Tom Felasco, Elizabeth Ackerman, and Mauricio Castro, among others. The first meetings were an adventure. We had an hour every Sunday on live radio – how were we going to fill it? Thank God we had Elizabeth and Mauricio who had radio experience. We learned much from them. Elizabeth created the “La Tia Peluca” program for children. Mauricio was the sound engineer while the rest of us looked for news and local happenings.

During that time we received a contract from Niagara Mohawk thanks to Mayra Urrutia. We were also blessed to receive financial contributions from the Central New York Community Foundation, which was the leverage we needed to obtain more hours and more funds. We have gone through many different phases at Nosotros, and many new volunteers, but we have always kept our eye on education because we know that education is the key to success. Our team grew even more when Nancy Rodríguez-Walker, Hugo Anamaría Villarreal, Alexis Sanchez, Iván Anamaría, Randy Luna, José Miguel Hernández, Carlos Perez, Oscar Vergara, Engracia Schuster, Acela Soler, Juan Mejía, Frankie Colón, Carmen & Carmen, and a countless number of others contributed to the program. We are grateful to all those who helped throughout the years.

Although we have always had dedicated volunteers, we have gone through our difficult times like any other organization. Nosotros would have had to leave the air in 1998 had it not been for Senator Hoffman, who helped us secure funding that would prove necessary for our survival. They say that there are always little angels watching over us on earth and it’s so true! The good thing about difficult times like these is that they teach us something. In this case, we learned what a wonderful blessing it is to have these angels around to support us.

With so much to be thankful for, we decided to begin celebrating Father’s Day each year as a way to thank all our volunteers and continue to raise funds. We owe our success to our volunteers, supporters, and many of the area’s businesses mentioned here. In particular, we are grateful to Ramada Inn, who allowed us to use its home in Liverpool year after year for our celebration. It was Ramada Inn’s very own employees who donated their time and love for our program.

Due to the separation of Nosotros, Inc. and the Spanish Action League, 2003 was another year of challenges that almost caused the program to go off the air. Just then, another angel appeared: Paul Nojaim, president of Nojaim Bros. Supermarkets, who helped us with funding. Thankfully, we surged ahead with our new ideas and new volunteers who revitalized the program and gave it new life. Among them are: Jenny and Dominico Rodríguez, Dorothy and Eduardo Huertas, Dawaris Velásquez and Diana Perez. In 2004, Jeff DeFrancisco, helped us formally incorporate NOSOTROS, Inc. “Tu Voz Latina”.

NOSOTROS, Inc. has earned the support and respect of our listening audience as a program that brings important and necessary community topics to the airwaves. Some of these themes have included “Raising Your Child”, “How to Work With Stress”, “Find a Job and Be Happy”, and “Be Positive”, among others. Furthermore, the program frequently welcomes invited guests such as representatives of AIDS Community Resources (ACR), representatives of the Domestic Violence program, local and federal government officials, and even Dr. Alejandro Garcia. We also have transmitted “Learn Spanish at Home”, a program created by Dr. Engracia Schuster that teaches Spanish. In addition, for the last 8 years, we have celebrated important holidays such as Holy Week, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Voter Registration Drive, Hispanic Heritage Month, Christmas, New Year’s, and more!

NOSOTROS, Inc., Your Latino Voice (103.9 & 95.3 FM), has served as an example for other organizations that have developed their own programs based on the foundation we share: Education and Culture. Nosotros – Your Latino Voice is run by volunteer DJs who provide Spanish & English language live radio entertainment combined with on-air education. The Nosotros program strives to educate the community on pertinent health, social, and well being issues via radio waves. The radio program began as a venue for cultural recognition through music and continues with that objective as we look forward to the next ten years with enthusiasm, creativity, and love.

Our recent incorporation means that Nosotros Radio, Inc. is in a position to grow in exciting and unique ways. Recently, we received grant funding to teach young Latina women how to plan for and create quality radio broadcasting in Spanish and English. In addition, we received funding to expand our programming to include the following segments: Talk to the Medical Expert, From Woman-to-Woman, Educating Your Child, Know Your Community, and Embracing Diversity. Our current air time is Thursdays from 8:30 - 10:00 pm and Saturdays from 3:00pm – 7:00 pm.

We are very proud to be NOSOTROS, Inc., Your Latino Voice! Thank you to our volunteers and our community for their support throughout the years.

¡July Heredia y sus amigos nos trajeron una Parranda para despedir el año!!

¡Feliz año 2009! Aunque un poquito tarde sus amigos de Nosotros, Tu Voz Latina, quieren desearle un Feliz Año lleno de prosperidad y salud. Con mucho gusto queremos compartir una visitia muy especial que recibimos el último sábado del 2008.

Las fiestas decembrinas se celebran alegremente en toda América Latina. En Puerto Rico hay una tradición que ofrece un regalo navideño que todos podemos disfrutar; la música. La tradición de las Parrandas reune a los vecinos y amigos para ir de casa en casa ofreciendo canciones tradicionales y navideñas. El sábado 27 de diciembre llegaron a la cabina de WVOA July Heredia, Julito Heredia, Juliana Heredia, Mary Vazquez y nuestra Ofelia Anamaría. Con su música nos contagiaron de buen humor y nos hicieron cantar y bailar. Después de estar con Nosotros nuestros amigos continuaron la Parranda por los hogares de amigos y vecinos afortunados que despidieron la noche cantando, felices de haber sido "asaltados" por una tradición que continúa viva.

Celebremos el Mes de la Herencia Hispana

El mes de la Herencia Hispana se celebra del 15 de Septiembre al 15 de Octubre en los Estados Unidos. El pasado viernes tube la oportunidad de asistir a la ceremonia de inauguración que se celebró en la ciudad de Syracuse. Augusto "Goose" Perez dio una plática muy entretenida y motivadora acerca de su interés por los deportes así como de su lucha contra el cancer. Su historia demuestra que con entereza, determinación y el apoyo de los seres queridos todos podemos enfrentarnos a los retos mas difíciles y lograr grandes azañas. La ceremonia también contó con la presencia artística de La Joven Guardia del Teatro Latino que dirige José Migue Hernández. A quí podrá encontrar mas información acerca de eventos que celebran las tradiciones y contribuciones de los Hispanos y Latinos en nuestra comunidad.

El día de hoy estuvieron como invitados en Nosotros, Caroline Kim una activista con el "Detention Task Force" y Aly Wane del "Syracuse Peace Council", ellos compartieron información sobre el trabajo que miembros de la comunidad están haciendo para proporcionar ayuda a inmigrantes que han sido victimas de acoso o perfilamiento racial por parte de autoridades como ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) y la Patrulla Fronteriza. El Detention Task Force reune a personas que se han solidarizado con inmigrantes que se sienten con miedo de salir de sus casas, ir al trabajo o hasta a la iglesia ya que pueden ser encarcelados y separados de sus familias. Carolina Kim habló también de las manifestaciones que el grupo ha encabezado en las afueras del Centro Regional de Transporte en la ciudad de Syracuse como parte una campaña para informar a las personas que la Patrulla Fronteriza tiene una presencia en los autobuses y trenes en la región y para que conozcan sus derechos en caso de que sean interrogados. Por último, Aly Wane hizo un llamado a la comunidad Hispana para que se una y deje saber a las autoridades y al gobierno que apoyan a los inmigrantes y que sus derechos humanos deben ser respetados.

De Mujer a Mujer

Le damos la bienvenida a la profesora Beatriz Salcedo-Strumpf quien nos estará acompañando cada último sábado del mes para traernos su programa "De Mujer a Mujer". Una hora con información y temas de interés desde el punto de vista de la mujer Latina. Beatriz Salcedo-Strumpf es profesora de español en la Universidad de Nueva York en Oswego y autora de la novela "Correo Electrónico Para Amantes" así como de muchos cuentos y narraciones. Su interés por difundir la cultura Latinoamericana es evidente en su participación en eventos educativos y culturales tanto en la Universidad de Oswego como en la comunidad del centro de Nueva York. En Marzo del 2008 recibió un reconocimiento de parte de la Comision de Mujeres de Syracuse (Syracuse Women's Commission) por su labor como promotora cultural y su trayectoria en las artes. ¡Bienvenida!

El "señor de los deportes" Martínez, Bea González Presidenta del City Council, Fanny Villarreal y Ofelia Anamaría.

El pasado viernes, 15 de agosto, la bandera de República Dominicana ondeó en el City Hall de Syracuse para celebrar las contribuciones de la comunidad Dominicana en la región. Este fue el cuarto año de la celebración que se lleva a cabo gracias al entusiasmo y dedicación de personas como el señor Martínez, también conocido como "El señor de los deportes" por fomentar el deporte entre la comunidad Latina de Syracuse. Fanny Villarreal, fundadora y locutora de "Nosotros," fungió como maestra de ceremonias. Cada año en agosto 16 se celebra la Batalla de la Restauración en la República Dominicana. ¡Felicidades a todos nuestros amigos Dominicanos!
